Who are the Nayanmars?

The Nayanmars were 63 Tamil saints from South India who lived between the 6th and 9th centuries. They were known for their devotion to Lord Shiva and are remembered for their poetry, acts of sacrifice, and service to Shiva and His followers.

The word Nayanmar means "leaders" or "lords." These saints came from all walks of life—kings, queens, soldiers, hunters, farmers, potters, priests, oil sellers, washermen, and even those considered outcasts—proving that devotion to Shiva goes way beyond caste or social status.
