Idangazhi Nayanar

The Story of Idankazhi Nayanar

Idankazhi Nayanar was a righteous king who ruled the kingdom of Konadu from its capital, Kodumbalur. He was a devout follower of Shiva and a just ruler who ensured his kingdom was a peaceful and pleasant place to live. He believed his primary duty was to serve Shiva and, by extension, the Lord's devotees.

One night, a devotee of Shiva was caught by the royal guards while stealing grains from the king's granary. When he was brought before the king, the devotee explained that he was only trying to get food to feed other followers of Shiva.

Instead of punishing the man, King Idankazhi was filled with remorse. He realized that his full granary was worthless if a devotee of Shiva was suffering from hunger. In a remarkable display of humility and devotion, he not only set the devotee free but also thanked him for showing him the true purpose of his royal wealth.

The king then issued a royal proclamation: from that day forward, any devotee of Shiva could take as much grain and treasure as they needed from the royal stores. Through this act of unparalleled generosity, King Idankazhi Nayanar ruled his kingdom with compassion and wisdom. After a life dedicated to serving his subjects and Shiva's devotees, he attained the feet of the Supreme Lord.
