The Story of Iyarpakai Nayanar
In the ancient city of Kaviripumpattinam, a wealthy merchant named Iyarpakai dedicated his life to serving followers of the god Shiva. His unwavering commitment earned him the name "Iyarpakai," meaning he whose actions defied normal expectations.
One day, Shiva appeared at his home disguised as a Brahmin devotee. Iyarpakai welcomed him and promised to grant any request. The Brahmin then asked for Iyarpakai's wife. Without hesitation, Iyarpakai agreed. His wife, equally devout, accepted his decision.
The Brahmin then asked Iyarpakai to escort them out of town, fearing trouble from his relatives. Taking up his sword and shield, Iyarpakai acted as their protector. When his relatives confronted them, Iyarpakai fought them off to protect the devotee.
Once they were a safe distance away, the Brahmin told Iyarpakai to turn back. As Iyarpakai left, the Brahmin called out to him. When Iyarpakai returned, the Brahmin was gone, and his wife stood alone. Suddenly, Shiva and his consort Parvati appeared in the sky.
Shiva praised Iyarpakai's extraordinary devotion and his wife's loyalty, granting them both a place in his divine home. Iyarpakai's story is remembered for his willingness to give up what was most precious to him to serve another devotee.
