Muruga Nayanar
The Story of Muruga Nayanar
In the charming town of Pumpukalur, on the banks of the Kaveri River, lived a kind-hearted Brahmin named Muruga Nayanar. He was a learned scholar, but his true passion was to serve Shiva. His way of worship was to decorate the god's form with fragrant, beautiful flowers.
Every day, before the sun rose, Muruga Nayanar would go out to gather the most perfect flowers. He collected a variety of blossoms from the forests, hills, and ponds, all while chanting the holy name of Shiva. He then wove them into beautiful garlands and floral crowns to adorn the god's statue in the Vartamanishwaram temple. To him, this act was a way of offering his pure, devoted heart to the Lord.
His dedicated service caught the attention of other great saints. He was blessed with the friendship of two famous devotees, Tirugnana Sambandhar and Tirunavvukkarasar. They stayed at his home and were deeply impressed by his simple yet profound devotion.
Muruga Nayanar's journey came to a divine end when he attended the wedding of his friend, Tirugnana Sambandhar. At the wedding, Tirugnana Sambandhar prayed, and a sacred flame appeared. Muruga Nayanar, along with the others present, walked into the flame and was united with Shiva, achieving eternal liberation.
His story is a reminder that a sincere, loving heart, expressed through even the simplest acts of devotion, is the most beautiful offering of all.
