Seruthunai Nayanar

The Story of Seruthunai Nayanar

In the fertile land of Thanjavur, a farmer named Seruthunai Nayanar was born with an unwavering devotion to Shiva. His heart, hands, and mind were completely dedicated to serving the Lord with perfection. He spent his days in the Tiruvarur temple, tirelessly performing various services.

One day, the queen of the Pallava king, Kazharsingar, came to the temple. She was admiring the flowers that were being prepared for Shiva's garlands when she impulsively picked up a fresh flower and smelled it. According to the strict rules of temple worship, flowers meant for the Lord are not to be used or smelled by anyone before being offered.

Seruthunai Nayanar, who saw this act, was enraged. To him, this was a grave sin, a defilement of a sacred offering intended for Shiva. He didn't care that she was the queen; he saw only the act of disrespect. In a sudden and extreme display of his fierce devotion, he rushed forward with a sharp weapon and cut off her nose.

His act, though shocking, was a testament to his uncompromising commitment to his service. He believed that no one, regardless of their status, should be allowed to disrespect the holy offerings. After a lifetime of impeccable service, Seruthunai Nayanar reached the feet of Shiva, forever in his service.
